Hey Playmakers!!! Nick Marro here with my KBO Breakdown for both DraftKings and FanDuel. Until the MLB returns, my focus will be on the Korean Baseball League. In addition to my Core-5 for each site, I’ve also provided you with my top Pitchers and Stacks for tonight/today’s slate which locks at 5:30 AM EST.
It’s been a while since we’ve had any Baseball DFS, so it’s important to remember the following. Stacks win tournaments, there’s a ton of variability, and variance can be your friend as ownership is often correlated to the lines/odds in Vegas. I recommend starting any line-up with a hitter stack and then building from there. We don’t yet have the quality Sabermetrics we do for the MLB, so we’re stuck relying on some older metrics in some cases. Regardless, it’s going to take some time to get used to this new league. The slate locks at 5:30 AM EST, so set an alarm if you’re playing for a lot of money and make sure your guys are in the line-up. If you have a recommendation for what you’d like to see in this article, just let me know!!!
Odrisamer Despaigne/KT Starting P ($8,300/$23): I’ll start this off by stating the obvious, there really aren’t many quality options at SP on this slate. Despaigne is my clear-cut favorite, but even he comes with a degree of risk here as he’s set to face off against a decent KIA Tigers line-up. Still, there’s really no way to avoid him tonight. So far in 2020 he’s posted an impressive 2.24 FIP which is nearly identical to his ERA. His 7.88 K/9 isn’t anything special, but it’s a strong number relative to the rest of the KBO and even stronger relative to this specific slate. Oddsmakers are giving KIA a slate-low 3.8 Implied Run Total in. I plan to have more Despaigne than any other Pitcher on this slate. He’s a tier above the other options we have tonight.
Chan-Heon Jung/LG Starting P($6,500/$26): This is Jung’s first season as a Starting Pitcher after serving as a Reliever for the past several. He’s been serviceable so far in his new role, maintaining a 4.21 FIP and a 7.20 k/9 across a very small sample size of just 10 IP. It does seem he’s fully stretched Out as he pitched into the 6th his last time out. On another slate, I probably wouldn’t have even blinked at Jung here. On this one, he’s a viable option on both sites as a -170 favorite. The price is far more appealing on DraftKings, but given our limited options here I’d consider him viable everywhere. I like his floor in what figures to be one of the safer spots on the slate.
Ki-Young Im/KIA Starting P($7,500/$24): Through three starts this season, Im is posting career best numbers in both FIP (2.80) and BB/9 (1.13), while sporting a very solid 7.88 K/9. While I’m hesitant to fully buy into him here, the fact he has a 2.80 FIP with a .326 BABIP tells me there is truth to these numbers. He’s coming off one of the best starts of his career in which he twirled 8 Innings of 1 ER ball with 4 Ks on 90 pitches against Lotte. KTW is far from a walk-over here, but on a slate where we’re truly hurting for quality pitching – I’m fine running him out anywhere.
Jae-Hak Lee/NC Starting P ($9,000/$26): Lee isn’t the type of guy that’s going to blow you away with Strikeouts (6.06 K/9 in 2020), but he does do a good job keeping the ball in the park, which is more than can be said for a lot of the guys on this slate. Lee has averaged less than a HR per 9 in each of his last three seasons, including 2020. He has a 4.35 FIP so far this season, and while I don’t think he’s worth the $9,000 price tag on DraftKings – he’s a viable option if you’re trying to expand your player pool here.
Also Consider: Se-Woong Park/Lotte Starting P
Top Stacks (and who I’m targeting):
Note: Just like in MLB DFS, stacking is extremely important. Since the KBO has far fewer HRs than the MLB, ‘small ball’ can be your friend. Your one-off plays should either be excellent value – or guys were raw power (or stolen base) potential. Try your best to stack and double-stack using the following teams. From there feel free to use one-offs.
NC Dinos (NCD): The Dinos have been the most consistent hitting team in the KBO this season, and tonight they have a solid 5.5 Run Implied team total against Hyun-Hee Han of Kiwoom. There are worse pitchers on this slate than tonight, but the Dinos have been hitting against everyone and I have trouble expecting that ends here against a guy with a 4.92 FIP this season. You’re going to have to wake up and check, but Eui-ji Yang (C) is my favorite bat in this stack if he returns here. He has been nursing multiple injuries, so be sure to confirm he’s starting before lock, but he fills a void at a weak Catcher position on DraftKings, and he’s truly one of the best bats in the KBO when he’s in. After Yang (or if Yang is out), Sung Bum Na (OF) and Suk-min Park (3B) are my second and 3rd favorite options from this team. Na is one of the premier bats in this league, and Park has looked excellent this season as a starter as his price remains reasonable everywhere. Fourth (and perhaps even higher if you’re chasing upside) Aaron Altherr (OF) is a strong OF option tonight. I like him much better on FanDuel as his DraftKings price still feels a bit too high, but after watching Him crush a HR last night I’m happy to get to him on either site. After that, I like Jin-Sung Kang (OF) as lower-owned outfield play if he’s starting. Myung-Gi Lee (3B) and Min-woo Park (2B) both appeal to me here IF they’re hitting at the top of the order. Jin-Hyuk No (SS) is viable shortstop option if he makes the line-up. There are a lot of moving parts here so be sure whoever you select for this stack is indeed starting. Yang has been a killer when he’s in, but he’s sitting more often than not. Regardless, this is one of my favorite teams to stack on this slate. I’ll have plenty on both sites.
LG Twins (LGT): There are several other teams with higher implied totals tonight, but the LG Twins are one of my favorite stacks anyway. Min-Je Jang is mostly terrible. He’s coming off a game in which he allowed 6 ER on 12 Hits to KT, and his .377 BABIP allowed on the season is actually similar to the type of number he’s been allowing for years. I don’t see any sort of bounce back for him here against a strong hitting Twins team. The DraftKings price on Roberto Ramos (1B) continues to be the joke of the industry. He’s one of the best Power Hitters in this league and he’s totally locked in right now (HR last night). I have trouble building LGT line-ups on this slate without leaning on him in this spot. He’s one of the highest priced guys on FanDuel, but I’m fine getting to him there as well. After Ramos, Hyun-Soo Kim (OF) and Chun-Woong Lee (OF) are my top priorities at the top of this order. Kim is expensive, but both of these guys have been tearing the cover off the ball. The price on Lee makes him a borderline Core play on DraftKings. Another guy that’s just way too cheap on DraftKings is Eun-sung Chae (OF). He’s looked great so far this season and he’s still reasonably priced. I’d round out LGT stacks with Keun-Woo Jeong (2B) who homered last night, and Catcher Kang Nam Yo (C). One more guy I like you’ll need to check on, Ji-Hwan Oh (SS) is a nice value option on both sites but only if he cracks the line-up. I feel really good about these Twins tonight as a lower owned option with as much upside as the more popular ones.
Lotte Giants (LOT): Tae-In Won could very well be the worst SP on this slate. He’s carrying a 6.11 FIP through 4 Starts this season. He’s averaging more than 4 Walks per 9 IP and he seems mostly lost so far as a 20-year old in his 2nd year of KBO play. Lotte has been up and down of late, but I’m happy to turn to them here at what should be reasonable ownership. My favorite bat from this stack tonight is Jun-Woo Jeon (OF). He has an impressive .398 wOBA and .250 ISO to start 2020, he’s on a 10-game hitting streak, and he’s reasonably priced on both DFS sites tonight. After Jeon, I’m likely to be heavy on a streaking Ah-Seop Son (OF) who seems to reach base almost every AB. He has that rare power/speed combo we love for DFS and fantasy purposes. Power-hitting Dae-Ho Lee (1B) has yet to really get going in 2020, but I expect he turns a corner soon. I’m fine with him here as well. Dixon Machado (2B/SS) is a fine option but if he’s batting 8th or 9th again here I’d have trouble paying his DK price. Regardless, his upside is as good as anyone’s on this slate. Byung-Hun Min (OF), Chi-Hong An (2B) and Dong-Hee Han (2B/3B) are all affordable on both sites and should serve as secondary options once you load up on Jeon, Son, Lee, and Machado (if he’s in the middle/top of the order). I especially like Min on DraftKings where he’s too cheap at $4,000.
Doosan Bears (DOO): This is far from my favorite spot tonight, but I’d be stupid not to at least touch on Doosan here. They have a ridiculous 7+ Implied Team total, which alone warrants some serious consideration. That being said, the ownership on them is going to be a bit too heavy for my liking. I expect they’ll be over-owned against Seung-won Moon whose 3.72 FIP and .440 BABIP suggests he’s been a lot less lucky than he has been bad. His 5.63 ERA is deceiving. Since I’m playing multiple line-ups, I’ll have some exposure. However, don’t feel like you need to prioritize them on this slate the same way we have on others. If anything, I’d use Doosan value (J-W. Oh, J. Kim, Park, J. Choi) in Cash games. Jose Fernandez (1B) is match-up proof so he works anywhere you can fit him.
